Always Already Free: Recognizing the natural wakefulness we were born withBy Enza Vita

“This brilliant contribution to our modern understanding of authentic identity and Presence brings us to a new awareness of ourselves and our innate wholeness and completeness. Enza’s personal awakening story, in the first few pages, is worth the price of admission. Enlightened wisdom is like an endangered natural resource today, which we overlook at our peril.”
— LAMA SURYA DAS, author of Awakening the Buddha Within

“This is a great contribution to our appreciation of the genuine voice of Pure Presence. It brings us to a deeper awareness of what it means to study the self and our intrinsic true nature as that which is already perfect, whole and complete. It is certainly worthy of your time and attention.
— ZEN MASTER D. GENPO MERZEL, author of Big Mind, Big Heart

THE BOOK
Based on Enza’s own experience, Always Already Free is a guide to discovering the deepest truth about who we are. In this book, the author:
• Presents her own personal direct encounter with the awakened state.
• Thoroughly addresses the ongoing debate between the necessity of spiritual practice and the ever-present possibility of sudden awakening, while at the same time offering detailed instructions for the practice “Instant Presence - Allowing Natural Meditation To Happen.”
• Guides the reader from the seeking process through the integration of spiritual enlightenment into everyday life and reveals that enlightenment is not a faraway dream, intellectual knowledge or even an experience but the direct realization of our true nature always available here and now.
“It is a paradox to practice to be what we already are ”– says Enza Vita “but while it’s true that we are always the Self, if this hasn’t been truly and directly realized, this knowledge won’t do us any good. Just knowing that there is no gate to pass through doesn’t mean that we are at the end of the search, not if we are still standing outside that gateless gate. Realization is not about you, the wave, realizing it is ocean. The ocean realizes itself in you and reveals itself to have never been just a wave.”

THE AUTHOR
Enza Vita is the publisher and editor of InnerSelf newspaper and Woman Spirit magazine and the founder and director of the MahaShanti Foundation, a non-profit organization serving the spiritual awakening of all beings.
She has spent over 40 years searching and studying under many of the great spiritual teachers of our age and she was exposed to the wonderful writings of many others around the world. As a result she was able to discover the universal teaching underlining all of them and to distil and present a modern practical authentic spirituality that reaches beyond all religions, yet allows for them all to remain, as they are.  “The truth I talk about is not limited to any tradition” – says Enza Vita, “but is found in, and open to, all true traditions”.

Review

"This brilliant contribution to our modern understanding of authentic identity and Presence brings us to a new awareness of ourselves and our innate wholeness and completeness. Enza's personal awakening story, in the first few pages, is worth the price of admission. Enlightened wisdom is like an endangered natural resource today, which we overlook at our peril; let's join in exploring and developing our own innate transformational resources for a change."
--Lama Surya Das, author of Awakening the Buddha Within

"This is a great offering to our appreciation of the genuine voice of Pure Presence. It brings us to a deep awareness of what it truly means to study and realize the Self and our intrinsic true nature as that which is already perfect, whole and complete. It is certainly worthy of your time and attention."
-- ZEN MASTER D. Genpo Merzel, author of Big Mind, Big Heart

"Enza's book is a true book in that it continually brings the attention to what is the immediacy, the actuality right now. The uncontrived spontaneous naturalness. Being constantly reminded in various ways in every chapter that there is only life essence (awareness)the believed in entity is seen to have no self-nature and not stand on its own. In this recognition the book has done its work and that is That."
-- "Sailor" Bob Adamson, author of What's Wrong with Right Now Unless You Think About It?

"Enza writes in such a clear and down-to-earth way that it is almost impossible not to be able to relate to what she is pointing to. She describes how every child already knows their true nature and how simple it really is, and encourages the reader to check what is really true in their own experience rather than blindly believing what they have been taught since they have 'grown up'. Reading her wonderful book was just like drinking a nice cool drink that goes down so very easily. It is the validation that so many people are longing to hear."
--Unmani, author of Die to Love

"A book that shatters old myths and presents the essence of Enlightenment in a fresh, contemporary voice. I see it as the next step after The Power of Now for those looking to find a way to ground their realizations."
--Leo Drioli, editor of InnerSelf Newspaper, author of Every Moment's a Miracle and Let Your Spirit Sing CD

"As a satsang book, Enza, I'm pretty blown away with your clarity. I truly think you are one of the clearest authors I've ever read on the subject of satsang/non-duality. I'm not saying this to be ingratiating or even kind. I truly mean it! At this point Ihave edited for quite a few satsang teachers, including Gangaji, Eli JaxonBear, Issac Shapiro, John Sherman, Om Parkin, and Amber Terrell, not to mention the many others I've been exposed to, so I know what I'm talking about when Itell you that your expression is exceptional. And I love it that you actually figured out how to offer people a 'practice-less practice'".
-- Shanti Einolander, publisher of ONE the magazine and editor of The Diamond in Your Pocket and You Are That! by Gangaji

From the Author
Enlightenment is not a special experience. We're always looking for that special experience in the midst of our ordinary life like looking for diamonds in the mud, but the mud itself is pretty interesting. Remember when we were kids? Who cared about the diamondsright? Give me the mud, much much more fun...And when we really see the mud, our ordinary life just as it is, that very seeing is the Love, Peace, Joy and Freedom that we have been looking for.

What we are in essence includes everything. It also includes our humanity and being human involves having thoughts and feelings. This is not something to be abolished but something to be fully experienced. Realization does not abolish one's humanity but it actually makes us more human because nothing is resisted.

Enlightenment is not like a perpetually sunny day or being "in the zone" 24 hours a day or having a sustained experience of any kind but it's more about seeing the face of God, the Beloved in everything as everything and knowing that everything is an expression of That - winning, losing, being in the zone, being out of the zone, falling flat on our face and resting as That which includes and transcends all duality.

True Realization  is seeing God, or the play of Consciousness, not just in the transcendental state but in and as the physical world, in and as all these other beings, and in and as us.  And the realization is that God, the source the Absolute is everywhere and everything including our ordinary life as it moment to moment. Sometime beautiful, sometime messy and even terrible. But always always deeply miraculous.

This book's purpose is not to give you more knowledge, more concepts, more beliefs or more practices, but to help point you back to that which shines eternally within you, needing nothing for the revelation of itself.

May you come to know, without a doubt, that who you truly are is this freedom. This has always been and always will be so.

All that exists is this freedom, and you are ALL. You are the awake, boundless, omnipresent consciousness that is right here, right now.

To follow where I am pointing is to abandon all that you know -- all your experiences, all your concepts, all your states and conditions -- and jump into the unknown. It is to free yourself from all reference points, all limitations and all boundaries. To let go of all hope for a better, more spiritual future for yourself.

The reaching for enlightenment is the last thing this "me" you believe yourself to be does just before it dissolves into pure awareness, your natural original state.

Join me now on a journey to where you already are, this placeless place you have never really left.

Love, Enza

From the Inside Flap
Most of us live our lives in a continuous state of moving toward happiness and away from pain. Whatever we may have, we believe it is never enough and our continual efforts to grasp the "next best thing" we think will make us happy inevitably leads to suffering.

As long as we continue to see happiness as a state that can only be found by getting something outside of ourselves, as long as we continue to experience endless cycles of acceptance and rejection, desiring and not desiring, pushing in one direction and pulling in another, we will never experience lasting happiness.

Living in a three-dimensional world makes us believe in the illusion that there is a "me" in direct opposition to an "other" that is outside of us. This "other" can be people, places, circumstances, and objects of all kinds.
It's hard for us to view the world in any other way but this one.

The search for happiness will be never-ending as long as we believe there is a "me" in here and an "everything else" out there. Suffering is guaranteed to continue as long as we insist on viewing the world in these dualistic terms.

At some point in our personal journeys, we start to see the impossibility of such a dualistic setup. We want to be free of the paradox. We want an end to our suffering. We hear about this thing called "enlightenment" and we think, "Aha, this will be my ticket out!" and so begins the search for enlightenment.

But what is this elusive state called enlightenment?

More often than not, it’s difficult to determine which new titles will have staying power 10, 20 or 50 years from now. But “A Crack in Creation” deserves to be on any short list of decidedly important nonfiction books of 2017.The reason is not simply because of the authors’ pedigree — co-author Jennifer Doudna is credited as the chief pioneer behind CRISPR, the potentially world-changing gene-editing technique. The book’s impact is also buttressed by the authors’ scientific rigor, deeply felt passion, and understanding of the world-changing consequences of their research.Doudna and Samuel Sternberg’s “A Crack in Creation” is two books in one. The first third is a short primer on genetic engineering and the scientists who’ve advanced the science over the years. While the attention to detail and footnote-rich documentation is commendable, the lay reader will be forgiven if she skips through some of the dry backstory to get to the good stuff in the remaining two-thirds of the book. Because few of us have yet to reckon with the significant issues raised by the recent breakthroughs in CRISPR research, which only came to light in 2012.As the authors write:“Many experts predicted that CRISPR would be a research biologist’s dream come true, enabling experiments that one could have only fantasized about doing before. I imagined that it would democratize a technology that had once been the privilege of the few. … Now, CRISPR seemed to be on everyone’s lips and the topic of every conversation. And yet it was still only the tip of the iceberg. …“As I sat on the plane flying back to San Francisco after that first trip to Cambridge, I could already see a new era of genetic command and control on the horizon—an era in which CRISPR would transform biologists’ shared toolkit by endowing them with the power to rewrite the genome virtually any way they desired. Instead of remaining an unwieldy, uninterpretable document, the genome would become as malleable as a piece of literary prose at the mercy of an editor’s red pen.”Doudna’s initial worries centered on whether scientists would prematurely use CRISPR without proper oversight or consideration of the risks and whether bad actors might use the technology for nefarious purposes. So she took the first halting steps to begin a public dialogue about the implications of CRISPR research, first by organizing a roundtable of 17 scientists in January 2015 and then a larger gathering later that year to discuss gene therapy and germline enhancement. Those discussions continue to this day.Meantime, other researchers and entrepreneurs got busy. Entire companies have sprung up with the mission of conquering such genetic disorders as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease and Duchene muscular dystrophy. The reader roots along with the authors in cheering on what amounts to the beginning of what might be called “the precision genetic medicine revolution.”It’s helpful that the authors translate scientific arcana into everyday language, as when they mention that a snippet of DNA being modified by CRISPR is “roughly one one-thousandth the width of a human hair” or that a molecule “acted like a set of GPS coordinates” to guide the replacement DNA to the right spot or when referring to an enzyme as a “motorized hedge clipper.”Many readers will be interested in not today’s practical applications in the lab but in what tomorrow may herald. Count me in the latter category, as I just finished writing a suspense novel with CRISPR at the centerpiece. What’s so fascinating about the technology’s future prospects? The authors write:“In the future, parents may be offered the option of selecting for traits that go beyond disease susceptibility and gender and cross into areas like behavior, physical appearance, or even intelligence. The list of known associations between certain gene variants and a diverse list of traits continues to grow, and as the PGD technology improves further, what’s to stop fertility clinics from consulting this genetic information so they can offer their consumers even more choices when it comes to selecting the most desirable or ‘best’ embryos?”Entire conferences and mountains of newsprint will be devoted to dissecting the implications of CRISPR usage on early stage human embryos in the decades ahead. The door has just been cracked ajar.Where does Doudna, the progenitor of CRISPR, come down on the ethical scales?“I don’t believe there’s an ethical defense for banning germline modification outright, nor do I think we can justifiably prevent parents from using CRISPR to improve their chances of having a healthy, genetically related child, so long as the methods are safe and are offered in an equitable manner. … [But we also need to] redouble our commitment to building a society in which all humans are respected and treated equally, regardless of their genetic makeup. …“Advances in gene editing are enabling us to rewrite the very language of life—and putting us closer to gaining near-complete control of our genetic destiny. Together, we can choose how best to harness this technology There’s simply no way to unlearn this new knowledge, so we must embrace it. But we must do so cautiously, and with the utmost respect for the unimaginable power it grants us.”Well said. The authors smartly observe that society as a whole needs to be in on the decision on whether to move forward with certain aspects of the gene-editing revolution, and that scientists need to demystify the technology so the public can “understand their implications and decide how to use them.” Let the robust debate begin.

The late William Buckley claimed, "A conservative stands athwart history yelling, 'Stop!'" Dr Doudna is no conservative. Still, in "A Crack In Creation" she finds herself standing in the middle of the road of progress shouting, Wait! The book recounts her lab's discovery of how a highly adaptable region of bacterial DNA called the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) can be programed to edit DNA itself. Potentially, CRISPR gene editing will cure many human diseases and end much suffering.Amid all the excitement a dream in which she meets Adolph Hitler compelled Dr Doudna to ask the Frankenstein question: Just because we can do something (in this instance, edit the human germline), does that mean we should? In a collection of essays entitled "From Under the Rubble," Nobel laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn presents the image of technologists running hard to both keep up and stay ahead. They're running hard just to keep pace--heads down and tongues lolling, panting and sweating to stay ahead of the researcher on their heels while trying to overtake the researcher just ahead. But they never take the time to ask IF their research ought to proceed. All credit is due Dr Doudna for exclaiming, Wait! We need to talk this through; this issue is too big for just science. Yes, she comes down on the side of racing forward. But the way she thinks through this potentially humanity changing science helped me see gene editing not just with layman's knowledge, but with compassion and a bit wider perspective than when I started the book. And yet ... while she pays polite lip service to potential religious concerns about gene editing, her embrace of random evolution leads her to view religious objections as antiquated notions that need only be addressed to be disposed.Scientists (actually, their editors) writing for layman ought to include a glossary. That's missing. And her habit of expressing how brilliant her fellow scientists are gets pretty worn pretty fast. Regardless, A Crack In Creation deserves your attention. ~Star Readers: from out of the east

While the writing and presentation gives a sense of having been rushed out, and first part is a tough slog for a lay person, there is no doubt as to the importance of the issues raised in the 2nd and 3rd parts that should be elevated to a global dialogue. My mind immediately went back to the movie Gattaca in depicting what the future might look like for a genetically engineered human race (and admittedly, this may have contributed to my views below) - after all, what we are talking about with gene editing and germline editing is, or was for me, science fiction. The author's sometimes apparent (to me) hubris needs to be carefully balanced against the awesome power and "unknown unknowns" this technology may bring to humanity, e.g. a few passages leapt out, such as blithe dismissal of the likelihood of humans repeating the dark history of eugenics. Nevertheless, I believe the author is aiming to do good and this is an important contribution in shining a light in this area - I was surprised (and shocked) that science had progressed so far and so quickly, at least to me, without significant public debate or governmental intervention.

Fascinating subject, but the book is not particularly well written and frankly its way too technical, filled with a lot info you don't really need to absorb the enormity of this discovery. But thank you Jennifer Doudna and all the researchers who have spent years fine tuning this technique, I have no doubt you will save many lives. I can't imagine how to ensure that it's only used for good, not evil purposes.

"…a mythological tour de force."— The New York Times"Out of print for many years, Norse Gods and Giants has been very handsomely reissued by the The New York Review Children’s Collection and retitled D’Aulaire’s Book of Norse Myths. Featuring a sturdy sewn binding, the book arguably represents the pinnacle of the d’Aulaires’ achievement as storytellers and artists….the prose seems livelier and more robust in the Norse myths than in the Greek…Their retelling of the Greek myths for children had to pull its punches somewhat….but since sex doesn't feature as prominently in Norse mythology, this book is able to stay scrupulously faithful to the Edda and still maintain its PG rating. But not to worry: there’s still a lot of drinking, fighting and bad behavior, particularly on the part of fiery Thor, who is forever whacking frost giants on the head with his hammer, and the highly entertaining Loki, who is one of the most complicated and devious characters in anybody’s mythology, anywhere. Loki is the Bart Simpson of Norse mythology, forever pulling pranks, forever getting caught and forever talking his way out of the consequences…"— The New York Times Book Review"[These] works, especially the books of Norse and Greek myths, were and remain crucial to me, and now to my own children. The interest in mythology that was kindled by those two books has endured throughout my life, and has directly influenced my own writing in countless ways…The Norse book was always my favorite, though. I must have read it a dozen times at least by the time I was nine or ten."— Michael Chabon

About the Author

Ingri Mortenson and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire met at art school in Munich in 1921. Edgar’s father was a noted Italian portrait painter, his mother a Parisian. Ingri, the youngest of five children, traced her lineage back to the Viking kings. The couple married in Norway, then moved to Paris. As Bohemian artists, they often talked about emigrating to America. “The enormous continent with all its possibilities and grandeur caught our imagination,” Edgar later recalled. A small payment from a bus accident provided the means. Edgar sailed alone to New York where he earned enough by illustrating books to buy passage for his wife. Once there, Ingri painted portraits and hosted modest dinner parties. The head librarian of the New York Public Library’s juvenile department attended one of those. Why, she asked, didn’t they create picture books for children? The d’Aulaires published their first children’s book in 1931. Next came three books steeped in the Scandinavian folklore of Ingri’s childhood. Then the couple turned their talents to the history of their new country. The result was a series of beautifully illustrated books about American heroes, one of which, Abraham Lincoln, won the d’Aulaires the American Library Association’s Caldecott Medal. Finally they turned to the realm of myths. The d’Aulaires worked as a team on both art and text throughout their joint career. Originally, they used stone lithography for their illustrations. A single four-color illustration required four slabs of Bavarian limestone that weighed up to two hundred pounds apiece. The technique gave their illustrations an uncanny hand-drawn vibrancy. When, in the early 1960s, this process became too expensive, the d’Aulaires switched to acetate sheets which closely approximated the texture of lithographic stone. In their nearly five-decade career, the d’Aulaires received high critical acclaim for their distinguished contributions to children’s literature. They were working on a new book when Ingri died in 1980 at the age of seventy-five. Edgar continued working until he died in 1985 at the age of eighty-six.Michael Chabon is the author of several books, including The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Wonder Boys, The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Klay, The Yiddish Policeman’s Union, Manhood for Amateurs: The Pleasures and Regrets of a Husband, Father, and Son and, most recently, Telegraph Avenue.

This is just a fabulous book. There are wonderful illustrations and the stories are written to entertain children as well as adults. I used this for a unit I taught to 3rd and 4th graders on Norse culture, and actually read it myself first to better understand the people. It is well written, but not too long so as to loose the interest of younger minds. There is a great glossary, and a fabulous tree in the back to show the realms of the Norse worlds. This is a must have for any child interested in The Norse culture or mythology in general.

I have the D'Aulaires Greek Myths and love it. Super glad that I added the D'Aulaires Norse Myths to our collection. My oldest son 13 is reading this to further his knowledge of the myths. However, I'm reading it to my little ones ages 8 & 10 to give them an understanding of the myths to go along with our Viking study in our homeschool. I believe this book is great for any age 6 and above. I find this book interesting myself. Written in a story manner, not textbook. Never boring! The pages are very delicate though they are made of a color page like paper. The illustrations aren't as vivid like I would hope. The greek myth book has vivid pages. I do love the hard cover of this book. Another wonderful book to further our learning as a homeschooling family!

My kids ages 10, 9, 5 and even the 2 year old LOVE Norse myths! We originally borrowed it from the library but we borrowed it so many times I figured we might as well buy it we love it so much. I am more into Greek mythology so I'm not sure how accurate this is but what I've heard and read is D'Aulaire's is supposed to be a fair edition. We started with the D'Aulaire's Greek Myths and they loved that so we progressed to this. It is a sweet, simple retelling. Not too indepth or too graffic. Well written and engaging. We have reread this book many times.

My 10, 7, and 4 year old sons love these stories (well, the 4 year old is touch and go, but...). We've read D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths out loud three times already, and will definitely be reading the Norse Myths book repeatedly, as well. I find them to strike an excellent balance between staying true to the (sometimes complicated) classic stories, while distilling them in a way young readers can understand. The illustrations are a nice complement to the flow of the stories. We are dedicated library users, but both D'Aulaire's Greek Myths and the Norse Myths are books we decided we need to own.

This is a great book to read to your children if you are of Nordic, Swedish, Icelandic, and Danish decent, as this is the old Sagas from the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, wrote for reading to your child. The illustrations are fantastic, and is very well done. I have both Eddas and read this to my daughter so she will have an appreciation for our ancestors. Highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to continue the old Scandinavian way.

This is the classic, the standard by which the telling of Norse mythology is measured. I first read it as an older child of ten, and it still holds up perfectly to this day. Get this and d'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths for the best bedtime reading you could ever give to a kid.

I was first introduced to the work of d'Aulaire back in the 5th grade, many years ago, with the Book of Greek Myths. Decades later I stumbled across this gem on Amazon and bought it immediately. The illustrations are just as good as in the Greek book, and they convey the dark flavor and material culture of the Norse in a satisfying way. The writing is uniformly clear, and the author shows again their ability to distill the essence of many mythological sources into one relatively continuous and internally logical narrative.Certainly not a replacement for scholarly sources, but excellent for both children and those more learned who appreciate seeing this material treated in an approachable and enjoyable way that conveys the alien and human nature of the Norse myths.

A great and wonderful book, even in this edition. Do not buy this book thinking it will be a reproduction of what you remember from your childhood. The book is slightly smaller, the quality less, the paper is thin, and the ink/coloring is not as vibrant. It's all together cheaper in every way. But if you've never handled the other book, you won't know the difference. I ordered this book with the D'Aulaires' Greek Myths from Doubleday, and the quality difference between them is shocking. That book I cannot recommend highly enough. Most annoyingly, because of the size difference, they don't look good next to each other on the shelf. You can track down the original edition of Norse Gods and Giants but good luck finding an excellent condition copy that isn't a car payment. That said, this is a great deal.
