I just received the book "Exhibition Design" today from Amazon.I was very excited to find the title because there are so few books on thesubject of museum exhibition design.I was however very disappointed with the overall quality of the book. I haveother W. W. Norton books ( Building the Empire State) and I own close to 300architecture and design books.I have never been so shocked at the poor quality of the photography in anyof my books. Some of the photos in Exhibition Design book were notsharp....some where so dark you could not tell what was really going on inthe exhibit...but most seem like they were photographed with a camera phone.I was even shocked at the poor picture resolution of the Ralph Applebaumexhibits (blurry non sharp pictures and poorly lit)... I have a couple ofbooks that cover the same projects and the photos in those books arewonderful...I assumed that companies like Applebaum send out a specificpress kit with professional photographs.I guess I have learned that I should always see a design book in personbefore buying it on line.

This book gives detail into what exhibition design spaces need including lighting, color, graphics, and goes into different types of exhibition design including narrative, interactive, and simulation. Each design example also includes good information on what the artist's message was and how they achieved it through the design choices. Very good choice

En Appelbaum, één van de invloedrijkste Amerikaanse ontwerpbureaus, illustreerde de vertelling van de slavenhandel (Museum of African-American History, Detroit) door levensechte beelden van Afrikanen in een schip te plaatsen. Zoals bekend benadert Appelbaums ontwerp voor het Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington de reis en het verblijf in concentratiekampen op akelig realistische en rauwe wijze. Bezoekers krijgen op hun tocht de naam van een al dan niet omgekomen Holocaustslachtoffer mee.Bij wetenschapsmusea zijn het vaak technische spektakelstukken die de aandacht trekken. Imagination bijvoorbeeld ontwierp in het Orange Imaginarium (genoemd naar de telecommunicatiesponsor) van Explore At-Bristol een installatie met optische fiberkabels. Tot dezelfde categorie rekent Dernie het veelbesproken Weather Project van beeldend kunstenaar Olafur Eliasson in de Turbinehal van Tate. In alle gevallen ontwierp architect Frank Gehry een expositie met motorfietsen. Hij legde licht krommende, spiegelende `linten' door de ruimte en plaatste daar de motoren op. In New York integreerde hij als contrast zelfs een met een lint vergelijkbare maar dan verticaal krommende roestsculptuur van Richard Serra uit de collectie in de motorshow. Verbluffend. In Las Vegas stond dezelfde expositie in een veel hogere ruimte, waarin Gehry gigantische bollende zeilen en foto's ophing.Casson Mann uit Londen is als bureau zowel in het boek als op de expositie in Platform 21 aanwezig. Uiteraard werkte de presentatie van diverse tentoonstellingen op de panoramische schermen met bewegende beelden in Platform beter dan in boekvorm. Casson Mann maakte van een tamelijk statisch onderwerp als het leven van Winston Churchill (deel van het Imperial War Museum, Londen) welbeschouwd een filmleader. Een tijdsbalk belicht Churchills lange en veelbewogen leven. Op sleutelmomenten "opent" de balk zich en verschijnt aanvullend beeld.Deze uitgesproken multimediatechniek werkt uitstekend omdat hij een geïntegreerd deel van de permanente expositie uitmaakt en er niet als extra laag bovenop ligt.Popcultuur was de inspirator voor de Opel-stand op de Geneefse autosalon. Het Zwitserse bureau Bellprat liet zich inspireren door de computergemanipuleerde videoclips van The Pet Shop Boys maar ook door het serene werk van de videokunstenaar Bill Viola.Ontwerper François Corvino keek voor een presentatie over de evolutie voor het Natural History Museum in Washington duidelijk naar educatieve Disney-films zoals die Disneyland te zien zijn. Niet alleen de beelden maar ook de muziek en hoorbare voetstappen bepalen de experience. In het nog te openen BMW Museum van Baur nemen monumentale filmbeelden bezit van de wanden en geven het vaak mausoleumachtige fenomeen `automuseum' net de nodige extra dynamiek.Terug in het boek zie je hoe architect Jean Nouvel het Guggenheim New York onderdompelt in duister om met theatrale belichting de luster en luister van de Mexicaanse kerkkunst uit de barok tevoorschijn te toveren.Jammer genoeg noemt men in het uiterst gevarieerde en informatieve boek (met detailfoto's en verduidelijkende plattegronden) met meer tijdelijke dan permanente presentaties geen budgets.Verder zou meer aandacht voor de invloed van multimedia als vierde dimensie, die tijd en (omloop)snelheid bepalen en het nodige technisch onderhoud vergen, niet overbodig geweest zijn.Anders dan in Platform, waar ze als gastheren optraden, ontbreken Opera Ontwerpers en Kossmanndejong en hun collega-Nederlandse ontwerpbureaus in het tamelijk Angelsaksisch gerichte boek. Desalniettemin is Exhibition Design als actueel en rijk uitgevoerd overzichtsboek zowel voor ontwerpers als museale tentoonstellingsmakers een standaardwerk.

Vulliamy, a British journalist with keen powers of observation and nerves of steel, describes what he saw during his 1992-1993 coverage of the war in Bosnia. Much of his compelling narrative consists of scenes in which drunken thugs and uniformed lynch mobs perpetrate outrages and atrocities against civilians, including the systematic rape of women. The testimony he collected for his chapter on rape in the war zone encompasses, as he puts it, "every conceivable dark cranny of sexual sadism and male violence." Vulliamy denounces the UN and the European Community for failing to come to the aid of Bosnia's stillborn democracy, especially its Muslim population, and for denying them the means to defend themselves. His coverage of the fighting in the former Yugoslavia earned him Grenada Television's Foreign Correspondent of the Year award in 1992. Photos.

As this review is being written, the morning Internet brings news of fresh Serbian "ethnic cleansing." The shock is not diminished, and Vulliamy's excellent work of firsthand reportage of the Serb and Croat war against the Muslims provides both context and understanding of the carnage, not least in the words of victims and participants. Most chilling are the words of a Serbian "intellectual" that Sarajevo was theater to divert world attention from what was happening elsewhere. More complete than Roy Gutman's excellent A Witness to Genocide (LJ 10/1/93), Vulliamy's account of the Bosnian war and the betrayal by the diplomats of "Western civilization" is so vivid that reading it produces moral and physical pain. This account of human and cultural genocide is essential reading for all but the morally indifferent.

Anyone who has followed the outrages perpetrated by Bosnian Serbs and Croats upon their Muslim neighbors must find it hard to be objective; perhaps to his credit, Vulliamy makes it clear that objectivity is not his goal here. Rather, he attempts to show the horrors inflicted on a people whose only crime is to be caught between the virulent revanchist nationalisms of Serb and Croat. While Vulliamy avoids the trap of equating the Serbs with Nazis and the Muslims with Jews, the parallels are certainly there. Vulliamy's rage is directed primarily against Serbian nationalists, but he also displays contempt for the inactivity of the Western powers. This is a work that tears at the emotions and shocks the sensibilities of decent people. Nevertheless, it is essentially a one-sided scream; while it eloquently serves to highlight the ongoing horror of Bosnia, it does not point the way to an ultimate, lasting solution that can send the demons of ethnic hatred back to the hell whence they came. Well I recalled seeing this book several years ago when there simply were not a lot of books discussing off road driving and recovery. I decided to pickup a used copy and ended up being pretty disappointed. While there is decent information in the book it really lacks updated information and illustrations. A few days later I also received Jim Allen's Four Wheeler's Bible and wow what a difference. Now I'm not here to write a review on another book but all I am saying is there is much more relevant information out there. I would leave this one on the shelf because it belongs in the 90's when the book was written.

This book alone would not be my first choice for someone just getting started.I have an extensive background working with vehicles, from a wide variety of on and off road vehicles to amateur and semi-pro race cars. I also have nearly 30 years of recreational off-road experience.I felt the author spent an inordinate amount of time on mechanical minutia, and he was either inarticulate about it or had such a tenuous grasp of it that the information bordered between misleading and erroneous. I feel that he skimmed over the important information for which a reader would more likely have bought such a book. He often cites specific brand gear rather than offering the criteria that one should use to choose the gear according to the type of trails and personal experience level.I bought this book, and another, to use as instructional material for my own budding off-road enthusiasts. This will serve fine as supplemental information. And in that respect, I can recommend this book. However, if your budget only allows the purchase of one book and you currently have no others, then I must withhold my recommendation.

As a newbie to four wheel driving, this book is worth its weight in gold to me. Okay, maybe I'm exagerrating a bit; however, I could not find another 4x4 book on the market with the wealth of information that this has.I now feel "free" as the title suggests, to take my new FJ cruiser off the beaten path.Wish me luck!

Someone once told me that the best tool you can bring on an off road trip is knowledge of your vehicle and techniques to get out of a sticky situation. If you don't have the experience it doesn't hurt to read up on the subject you intend to tackle. Great book.

Handy no nonsence book on fourwheel drive stuff, how to for various situations. As a guy it is sometimes hard to admit to needing instruction, we should have all knowledge through osmosis, this book gives the foundation all that is required after is practical experience.

Excellent collection of tips, tricks, suggestions and resource references. You may find some of this on the internet yourself, but having it in printed form for easy reference is worth the spend.

This book has some very useful information and is very easy to understand. I thought that the extra equipment/gear lists were a bit long and for myself some is not realistic to carry. If the information in this book is combined with other publications a good list of gear to carry on a 4 wheel adventure could be developed. The additional resources listed in this book were also very helpful. For new and experienced off-roaders this book is a useful tool.

About the Author
After pursuing a degree in theoretical physics from Cambridge University, Ajahn Brahm, born in London as Peter Betts, headed off to a forest monastery in Thailand, where he studied under the famed meditation master Ajahn Chah for nine years starting in the mid 1970s. A Buddhist monk for over thirty years, he is now the abbot and spiritual director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia in Perth, and he is in demand worldwide both as a spiritual teacher and as a popular speaker. He is the author of Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung?, The Art of Disappearing, and Mindfulness, Bliss, and Beyond.
